In this young adult adaptation of the acclaimed bestselling Just Mercy, which the New York Times calls 'as compelling as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so,' Bryan Stevenson delves deep into the broken U.S. justice system, detailing from his personal experience his many challenges and efforts as a lawyer and social advocate, especially on behalf of America's most rejected and marginalized people. In this very personal work--proceeds of which will go to charity--Bryan Stevenson recounts many and varied stories of his work as a lawyer in the U.S. criminal justice system on behalf of those in society who have experienced some type of discrimination and/or have been wrongly accused of a crime and who deserve a powerful advocate and due justice under the law. Through the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), an organization Stevenson founded as a young lawyer and for which he currently serves as Executive Director, this important work continues. EJI strives to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, working to protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. 'A deeply moving collage of true stories . . . .This is required reading.' --Kirkus, Starred Review Praise for Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption: 'Important and compelling.' --Pulitzer Prize-winning author TRACY KIDDER 'Gripping. . . . What hangs in the balance is nothing less than the soul of a great nation.' --DESMOND TUTU, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 'An inspiring and powerful story.' --#1 New York Times bestselling author JOHN GRISHAM

Warning This is an independent addition to Just Mercy, meant to enhance your experience of the original book. If you have not yet bought the original copy, make sure to purchase it before buying this unofficial summary from aBookaDay. This review of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, by Bryan Stevenson, provides a chapter by chapter detailed summary followed by an analysis and critique of the strengths and weaknesses of the book. The main theme explored in the book is the injustice of our criminal justice system. The author uses the case of Walter McMillian's wrongful conviction of murder and imprisonment as an overarching example of how the U.S. justice system does not prosecute fairly. The author focuses on how race, socioeconomic status, and even age have an effect on how certain criminals are convicted. Stevenson uses his personal experience as a lawyer for the Equal Justice Initiative and more than 25 years fighting for the rights of people who could not afford legal counsel as a basis for this novel. Through his own experiences, the author makes the case that it is often the people on the fringe of society who need proper justice and mercy, and yet, they are the ones who are least likely to receive it. By sharing his own case work, the author demonstrates how unjust death penalty convictions have been over the past fifty years and how hard it is to truly make change in the system. The central thesis of the work is that we are more than the worst things we have done. Yet, we live in a country that will, on the basis of one poor choice or decision, condemn a person to life in prison, or worse, death. Even further, law enforcement often targets those who have neither the money nor education to fight back, and this has had a direct correlation to the rise in mass incarceration over the past century. The author's purpose is to shine a light on this and bring about the kind of change that uses mercy as its own form of justice. Bryan Stevenson is a lawyer, social justice activist, and the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. He attended Eastern University and graduated in 1981. After that he attended Harvard Law School where he found his career calling by working for the Southern Center for Human Rights. He has since traveled the country, working for EJI, and speaking about the politics and social injustice of the prison system and death penalty. Shortly after, two men stood at the entrance of the apartment, the bullet riddled bodies told a story of horror. Both men were dressed impeccably. One wore a blue pinstripe suit, white shirt, red satin tie, navy blue alligator shoes and a Borsalino that was carefully broken down just right, shadowing his handsome face. His fingers were laced in diamonds and he carried a cane with the head of a lion with jeweled eyes. In front of him came in a slender gentlemen, dress in a black suit and dark shades he was called Decipher. He was the one that made sure the room was clear standing with his back against the opened door gun in hand. The man with the cane walked into the room stepping over dead bodies. He quickly went into the bedroom he removed the recliner that protected the hidden floor compartment. He opened the compartment door and removed the infant she was fine. She smiled up at him and through all that chaos she never made a sound. He pulled her close to his chest and kissed her on the forehead. Before leaving he removed several envelopes from the compartment and money that was stacked in hundred dollar increments. He walked over to Ebony’s body and removed the sterling silver heart locket from her neck. He and the gentlemen left. Sirens echoed from a short distance, the boys in blue were coming it was only two hours later.
